OUR STYLE CLOSET IS YOUR STYLE CLOSET
“Accessorizing should be seen like the spice of an outfit”
Most women agree that jewelry should be a part of every outfit. I’m still trying to find out why so many women find it such an agonizing chore to shop for accessories. We are a bit addicted to this particular part of the process… it’s our favorite. When you see our style closet in person, you’ll see we need AA! Accessories Anonymous.
We always carefully select the accessories for each outfit: they are a perfect touch that will enhance the simplest outfit and bring harmony to it. Great style is in the details!
Here is a great ARTICLE on accessories by Bridgette Rae: style expert that you should check out.
HOW TO PLAN THE PERFECT OUTFITS FOR YOUR FAMILY PORTRAITS
The very first question we hear after booking a family photo session is, “Now, what should we wear?”. We understand your anxiety, you are investing in your family portrait and that can feel like a lot of pressure. But it doesn’t have to be! Check out our time tested tips below for how to bring it all together without breaking the bank or your sanity!
When you get your large canvas print up on the wall you don’t want the colors to clash with your home’s decor. The color palette of your home is a beautiful place to start. If the color palette is composed of neutral colors, think about what colors would be complimentary. Colors such as a deep turquoise or maroon accent neutral colors very well. Mustard or melon look modern and clean with a gray palette. You’ve invested quite a bit of money for your family photos that will become treasured family heirlooms. Imagine your children viewing these photos when they are adults, the value of these images is priceless.
When choosing your clothing, remember, your family should be the focus of your portraits, not your clothing. If the colors of the clothes are too bright or the patterns are too distracting people will only notice that. You want people to see the smiles on your faces and feel the love you have for each other.
You want to choose clothing for your photo shoot that you feel most comfortable in and great wearing. If you aren’t comfortable, chances are you won’t feel great. Below you will find tips and suggestions on how to select outfits to capture beautiful portraits and results you’ll love.
Solid colors tend to photograph best however if you have a pattern you love, like flowers or lace, go with it. We want your personality and style to be present in your look for your session. But keep in mind that bold patterns and loud stripes can be very distracting, you what the focus of your images to be that beautiful baby bump not the pattern of your clothing choices.
Matching is out and coordinating is in. Let’s say you have a print maxi dress that you feel great in and know you want to build an outfit around it. Let’s say it has navy, salmon and mustard flowers. Your husband could wear navy cords and a mustard button up or polo and BAM you’ve got a great look going on. Your family can wear a color palette based on the print of your dress. Coordinating but not too matchy-matchy.
Let’s talk about timeless looks and textures for mom and daughters. You want to choose clothes that have a timeless and classic look. Lace tops, shirts, and dresses. Chunky cardigans and off the shoulder sweaters can bring a romantic and soft vibe into the portraits.
Accessories are the bomb-diggity and so are layers. Start with your base layer of clothing, a solid maxi dress, a solid colored top or jeans and then add layers of texture and accessories. Bring in a short tweed jacket or blazer, add a floral scarf, add a chunky necklace, bracelets or a headband. Don’t forget to pay attention to your feet. A cute pair of wedges or boots can complete the outfit but maybe going barefoot would work as well depending on the location of your choosing.
Select a few pieces and then lay it all out and begin to edit. You can begin to put outfits together. Check out online tools like the thousands of Pinterest boards dedicated to ideas on what to wear for all kinds of portraits. Once you’ve pulled some options out of your closet, begin to edit, keep it simple and lay your clothing choice out on your bed or floors to get a grasp of the whole look.
We are so excited to work with you and look forward to your day in front of our lens!
SHOULD WE WEAR MATCHING OUTFITS FOR OUR FAMILY SESSION?
Matching is out. Coordinating is in plus… anything goes these days! You are a family, you don’t need to be all matchy-matchy to get that across. Coordinating color as well as prints is what really brings your wardrobe together. no need to be carbon copies of each other.
“If Momma ain’t happy…ain’t nobody happy!”
We suggest choosing mom’s outfit first. Let’s say for example you have a flowy maxi dress with orange, turquoise and blue flowers on a cream background that makes you feel great every time you wear it. Put Dad in a jean/chambray button up shirt to match the blue. Little Henry can wear a plaid shirt in all the same colors with an adorable tweed jacket and maybe even a fedora hat. Then your 10 yr old, Emily, can wear a dress in a smaller print with the same colors or a solid. More kids = more coordinating! and FUN!
Don’t stress… you don’t need to … relaxed is so much more important than perfect. Perfect doesn’t exist. Thank goodness. We just want to show your happy loving family and we want you to have pictures of that!
SHOES AND LAYERS
If you can barely walk in heels, there’s no harm in doing cute and comfy flat boots or pretty sandals. If you can’t do a heel, a wedge is a great alternative. Especially if we are shooting out in the field, at a park, or by the waters edge. Bare feet can be great as well.
Layers are important in adding dimension and depth to your wardrobe. If it gets to chilly, add a layer. If it warms up you can always take one layer off. It also gives an opportunity for a second look when wearing just one outfit.

SUGGESTIONS FOR BUYING NEW OR SHOPPING OUT OF YOUR OWN CLOSETS.
Purchase or choose clothes that fit and fit well. You want to go more for a tailored look for your session.
Keep in mind that for pictures, a shirt that is too large, baggy ill-fitting jeans or a jacket that’s falling off the shoulders is just going to look sloppy. Purchase outfits specifically for pictures if you need to. The point is to choose something that fits perfectly, be it brand new or a current closet favorite. Consider a size smaller in jackets, cardigans or blazers. A jean jacket that is too big is not going to compliment anyone’s figure.
Mom, you do not want to hide your hips and waist. Wearing something that is too big is going to make you look larger not smaller.
ARE THERE ANY COLORS WE SHOULD AVOID?
Too much white on a bright sunny day when the sun is overhead can be problematic. If your session is scheduled between 10am and 3pm for an outdoor we suggest avoiding having too many family members in white.
As far as photography goes the florescent trend… we wish it would die! Fluorescent colors tend to color cast on faces, necks and hair. They’re harsh sometimes and do not photograph well in bright sun and on camera, the color can disappear.
We always recommend versions of primary colors.
Yellow = mustard
Red = maroon or brick
Blue = navy
Green = moss or ivy
Orange = salmon
FLEXIBILITY FOR THE SITUATION AND WEATHER
Flexibility is key. Layers are important.
No matter where you are from we all know that it can be cloudy one day and sunny the next. Temperatures can change by 20 degrees overnight. For that reason, we need to be flexible with your wardrobe, in case you have to switch it up last minute. Dress appropriately for the weather that day, even if it doesn’t go with the original plan.
When you have plans for your daughter to wear a cute sundress and a cold weather front comes in… add layers! Tights, boots, scarf, slouchy hat, her favorite cardigan will work wonders.
When your son is sweating in a sweater during his shoot and it warms up… he won’t be happy. He will turn from that sweet boy you know and love to a grump. And that grump will show in the final images. Dress him with a button up shirt or polo and a sweater over top. One that can be removed or added depending on temperatures on our session day.
Just as dressing for weather is important, dressing for the situation is another key for a successful outcome for your session.
A formal black dress and a suit and tie wouldn’t be the most appropriate wardrobe for a woodsy or open field setting. Formal wear would be more appropriate for a downtown, Indianapolis Museum of Art or an urban session. Dressing up will work well for sets at the Studio Backlot, like the Paris Loft as well but not so much for the open field or barn areas.
When shooting a lifestyle session in your home, wardrobe will take second place to the actual images we will be capturing. Lifestyle clients: wear whatever it is that you’d wear at home. No coordinating or matching necessary. Capturing normal every day life just as it is every day.

EVERYONE IS SO BEAUTIFUL ON YOUR SITE.
You might actually be surprised how often Marci and Christy hear that. Many of the people MAC photograph are nervous that they are not as photogenic but MAC believes that there is something special about every person they photograph…Everyone is beautiful!!!! One of their best talents is that they know what beautiful looks like and how to capture it. Leave the lighting and posing to the experts, relax and enjoy the experience.
If you love the images you see on this site, you will love the images MAC creates for you!
I WANT TO LOOK MY BEST! DO YOU OFFER HAIR AND MAKEUP SERVICES?
MAC has their own staff make up artist! At this time, they do not have full hair services. But they love creating hair change ups on the fly. All kinds of braids, updo’s and pony’s to help give a variety of looks throughout your session.
CAN I BRING A FRIEND, MY HORSE, DOG OR OTHER PETS?
Absolutely! Your mom, sister, or best friend is more than welcome to come along and help. But, only if it’s someone you can be yourself in front of and not someone who is not going to make you uncomfortable. Your bestie could be the secret to incredible images or could prevent you from feeling relaxed and confident in front of the camera. Please limit your entourage to no more than two people… it just typically works out best that way.
Yes to pets, of course! We specifically ask that you bring a person to care for the needs of the animal and that they be present at all times. Dogs need to be on leashes, snacks and water/bowl need to be on hand as well. It also helps if the pet can arrive separately and be taken away when they are finished with their portion of the photo shoot.
HOW LONG WILL OUR SESSION LAST?
Sessions generally last about an hour, depending on the needs of your family. Most younger kids (and dads!) will start to lose interest after about 20-30 minutes so we aim to maximize time as much as possible.
WHEN CAN I EXPECT TO SEE OUR IMAGES?
Approximately 10-14 days after your session, your images will be presented to you in password protected gallery. You will have 7 days to complete your order online.
WILL I BE ABLE TO SHARE MY IMAGES ON SOCIAL MEDIA?
Marci and Christy can create a customized social media app for your smart phone and when purchased, you will be able to share your images on Instagram, Facebook and more. These are not in any way suitable for printing, only for sharing.
All images by Marci and Christy are protected under the Federal Copyright Law, which means that even though you are the subject of the image, the photographer retains ownership and it is illegal to alter the images in any way. This means no cropping, editing, filters, scanning, copying (taking photos of the photos), or any other weird stuff. All web-ready images will contain a watermark to protect clients and to ensure that the images are never stolen and published on other websites or used for profit by third parties.
CAN OUR RELATIVES AND MY EX ORDER IMAGES TOO?
Sure…with our online ordering system, it’s a piece of cake!
