Senior year moves fast. Between college visits, Friday night games, and that ever growing to do list, picking a senior photographer can feel like one more big decision. And it is a big one. These are the photos that end up on graduation announcements, on Grandma’s fridge, and on your walls for years to come.
We have been photographing Indianapolis seniors for over 26 years, and we have helped more than 6,000 of them through this exact decision. So here is our honest guide to choosing the right photographer for you.
1. Start with the portfolio
Scroll through full galleries, not just the highlight reel. Do you love the lighting? The editing? The way the seniors look like the best version of themselves? If a photographer’s work makes you stop scrolling, that is your first clue.
2. Look for a style that lasts
Trendy filters fade. Timeless portraits do not. Ask yourself whether you will still love these images in 10 or 20 years, because your parents definitely will.
3. Make sure they can pose you
Most seniors tell us the same thing on day one: “I am so awkward in front of the camera.” Totally normal. A great senior photographer guides every pose, every angle, and every laugh, so you never have to guess what to do with your hands.
4. Ask about locations
Variety matters. Can they take you somewhere that feels like you? At MAC, sessions can happen on our private 2 acre studio backlot or at Indy favorites like Newfields, Coxhall Gardens, Mass Ave, Broad Ripple, and Holliday Park. Some seniors even bring us to their school or their favorite coffee shop.
5. Read the reviews
Reviews tell you how the experience actually feels. Look for comments about how the photographer made seniors feel, not just how the photos turned out. (We are proud to have over 400 five star reviews, and yes, we read every single one.)
6. Understand what happens after the session
Great photos deserve more than living on your phone. Ask how you will view your images, how many outfit changes you get, and whether they offer professional prints and albums. Heirloom quality prints are what turn a session into something your family keeps forever.
7. Choose someone you actually like
This one matters most. You will spend a couple of hours with your photographer, so pick someone who makes you laugh and helps you relax. When you feel comfortable, it shows in every frame.
Why families choose MAC Photography
We are Marci and Christy, a mother daughter team, and together we are MAC. We have spent our careers learning what makes seniors feel confident and what makes parents tear up at the reveal. We also teach other photographers across the country, so you are in experienced hands from start to finish.
